Are You Password Protected?

Today, the Globe and Mail and CBC News published articles about password security. Among the 25 most commonly used password, were such gems as: “123456” and “password”.

Passwords are an essential part of your company’s office security. From the protection of classified documents, to the management of your office telephone system, it is important to know how to generate secure passwords.

Here are some tips to keep in mind

  • Never use keyboard patterns such as:
  • 123456
  • asdfjkl;
  • qwertyuiop
  • Never use any part of your birthday, including your birth year
  • Make your password a minimum of 8 characters
  • Use a combination of letters, numbers, upper/lowercase, and symbols
  • E.g. @P4sS_W0rD$%
  • Avoid easy to guess words, especially those found in a dictionary
  • Never reuse the same password on other accounts, especially those that ask for personal information, such as your credit card
